The Blue Gold Macaw, also known as the Blue and Yellow Macaw, is native to Central and South America, notably Venezuela, south to Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. Its range extends north to parts of Panama. It inhabits forests and woodlands. It is easily recognized by its gold coloured under parts and bright blue back.
They reach a length of 76 – 86 cm. (0 – 34 in.) and a weight of 0.9 – 1.5 kg. (2 – 3 lb.)
These birds congregate in flocks of a hundred or more. There is no definite leader in the flock. Pairs mate for life and can live for 60 years or more.
Their food consists of seeds, fruits and nuts. They nest in natural cavities high up in trees.
