Eclectus Parrot
The Eclectos Parrot is native to the Solomon Islands, Sumba, New Guinea, Australia and the Maluccas. They exhibit the greatest sexual dimorphism of any parrot. The males are bright green and the females red with a jet black beak. They are about 35 cm (14 in) long with a weight of 430 gr. (0.9 lb).
Their diet consists of fruit, wild figs, flowers, leaf buds and seeds. Females nest in hollows in trees. A female will defend a nesting sight against all other females. She will remain in this hollow for up to 11 months, being fed there by multiple males via regurgitation.
Females usually lay two eggs. In the wild these birds can live up to 30 years and in Captivity 50 to 75 years.
There are 9 recognized subspecies of the Eclectos Parrot.
