Mississippi Map Turtle

The Mississippi Map Turtle is found in the central United States. Map turtles get their common name from the lines and markings on their shell which resemble the contour lines of a map. They are found in the Mississippi Valley from Illinois and Nebraska, down into the Gulf States from Mississippi to Texas. They are usually found in rivers, lakes and large streams. They tend to prefer habitat with abundant vegetation.

Females are considerably larger than males, the adult male can be anywhere between 3.5 – 5 inches in length and the adult female from 6- 10 inches in length. Males have a leaner look whereas females have a larger, bulkier build.
